Description

Old Version

Here's my process from lineart to finish (I am not showing my sketch phase but that is something that I do before the lineart. I am just too embarrassed to show them but maybe someday)...

-To create my lineart I use a mixture of freehand strokes and the polygonal lasso tool. I use the polygonal lasso tool to fill in shapes of black and the brush tool to draw the lines. If I am planning on coloring it I generally don't spend a lot of time on this since later on I am going to be able to shade in features. On here I left the latches on his shoulder piece undetailed but left enough to give me an idea of what will be there and the overall shape.

-After I have created my lineart, I set the lineart layer to "Multply" and create a layer under the lineart. On this layer I start shading under the picture. Since the layer is set to multiply anything that I draw under the lineart will not be seen as long as the lineart is black.

-After I am done shading under the lineart, I then shade more over it. At this point I can add form to the black on the picture (like Leviathan's whole suit and mask) as well as fix any of my errors and clean up everything as a whole. For example, I cleaned up the outline around the figure and lowered the whole left arm just a tiny bit. Also I added more black lineart to places as well as removed the lineart in other places by just shading and coloring over everything. If anything looked weird or unrefined after the first two steps I cleaned it up here.

-Then lastly if I am lazy I add a gradient map over the top of my shading to add some color or I just keep it is black and white and add some highlights to the picture and them I call it done. Also it is very possible to start in color and use the same method by first adding colors under the lineart and then over it. However for me it is much easier to draw in black and white first to make sure I have a nice wide range of values and then add color and know for sure that the colors placed on top will convey the same range of values.
